A Brief History of the Battle of the Somme

A Battle That Shaped a Generation

The Battle of the Somme Battlefields, fought from July 1 to November 18, 1916, is etched into British memory as one of the most significant and tragic events of the First World War. Over 141 days, the British advanced just seven miles at the cost of almost 420,000 casualties, including 125,000 dead. These numbers still resonate as a profound symbol of sacrifice and loss.

Despite the grim toll, the lessons learned at the Somme Battlefields played a vital role in shaping the British military’s future success. By the end of the battle, soldiers had become battle-hardened, and the once untrained masses were transformed into a formidable, professional fighting force. The Somme Battlefields remains a place of powerful reflection, where the bravery and resilience of those who served can never be forgotten.

About Me

Your Guide: Dedicated, Passionate, Experienced

IMG_0852.jpeg

For nearly 30 years, I’ve been drawn to the Somme battlefields. My first visit was in 1996 and I've returned regularly ever since, deepening my connection to this poignant chapter of history. Living in Southeast England, I am just a few hours away from the battlefields, making it easy to cross the channel and arrive where history is waiting.

In addition to my battlefield tours, I volunteer with two incredible organizations: the RAF Association (RAFA) and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). For the RAFA, I'm one of a group of volunteers who help provide one-to-one, personalised conversation, vital friendship and support via telephone and other initiatives to RAF veterans who have bravely served their country.  For the CWGC, I help clean and preserve the headstones of those who fell in the two world wars, who lie in my local cemetery. I also run regular free tours of the cemetery, helping others learn of the sacrifices previous generations made. It's a privilege to share these sites with others, whether it's children eager to learn or adults looking to connect with their heritage. I've earned the nickname 'The War Graves Guy' in the process, something I'm particularly proud of!

The Somme battlefields are places of reflection and remembrance. Walking or cycling through these serene landscapes, it’s difficult to imagine the intense battles that took place over a century ago. Yet, every visit reminds me of the bravery, sacrifice, and humanity that shaped this pivotal moment in history.

Whether I’m exploring alone or guiding a group, tracing the footsteps of a soldier and learning about his story is always deeply moving. I invite you to join me in uncovering the past and gaining a deeper understanding of the men who fought on these sacred grounds.

Martin was absolutely brilliant. Well informed, and presented his tour perfectly. I cannot fault him, or the tour, and would highly recommend.
